Friday Fourteen

Since we didn't finish naming all the new plants and flowers yesterday on our Thursday Thirteen, we created a Friday Fourteen to see how many more we can name! Maw is planting perennials so that she will have seasonal color spring, summer and fall. And she's planting a few annuals just because she likes them. But she wants to attract hummers and flybutters and beez with her flowers. So she's trying to buy stuff that those creachurs are attracted to. So here's some more:

1. Lobelia Cardinalis (Cardinal Flower) (already yanked out because it didn't last)

2. Eolvulus Nutttallianus (Blue Daze) annual

3. Alternanthera 'Red Threads' Amaranto, (Joseph's Coat) annual

4. Lagerstroemia Indica (Dynamite Crape Myrtle)

5. Scaevola, Brilliant annual

6. Variegated Liriope

7. Cast Iron Plant

8. Wild Red Columbine (yanked 2 of these out already, will see if the 3rd one makes it.)

9. Turks Cap

10. Plectranthus coleoides 'Nicolleta', (Nicolleta Swedish Ivy)

11. Purple Fountain Grass annual

12. Dwarf Mondo Grass

13. Maw plans on getting several varieties of Autumn sage to attract the hummers.

14. 900 sq. ft. of St. Augustine sod is being delivered on Wednesday. Maw says this is more sq. footage than her first house in Omaha was. She's gonna be furry tired and sore after Wednesday.... Anyhoo, the Bur Oak, the Aristocrat Pear, the Bald Cypress, and the Chinese Pistachio trees that she has planted over the years have shaded most of the ornamental garden areas and a lot of the grass. So, that's why she's planting St. Augustine grass and shade tolerant perennials in many areas.

Oh, and she's probably gonna refrigerate some tulips and plant those in December. Tulips are only annuals here because it doesn't get cold enough for them. So in order to make them grow, you have to buy them in the fall and refrigerate them for like 45 days or something and then plant them. They will bloom in February or March depending on the weather.

Happy gardening!

That's a lot of plants! I'll bet the Cast Iron plant is very strong. I was wondering, does the Chinese Pistachio tree really grow pistachio nuts? I like to eat pistachio nuts (I only get tiny little pieces though).

Tell your maw not to work too hard!

WOW!!! Maybe next year Meowmy will be gardening but for some reason it scares her... This weekend she's painting the living room me! Well, the color is named after me at least.

We know about the purple fountain grass - it's very pretty! You'll have to post pictures once everything is planted and growing.

Us - we would be happy just to get rid of the weeds!

Sounds like yer Maw has worked her socks off!! She needs some nap time, but we bet the garden will be looking lovely furr next year. Our mum's fed up wiv our garden cuz we had so much rain all the leaves rotted off the flowers, and the rabbits ate all the carrots and beetroot.

Hello Forty Paws! I am back from vacation!

I haven't heard of that many plants before - at least not the real names - I know we have bushes, squirrel watching trees, grass, and ferns here.
Number 12 is named after Dorf (withou the W)

Maw - how you do it all amazes me!
Lobelia Cardinalis doesn't do well for me here in Michigan, either - the soil is too sandy. They like water-retaining soil, and will live in a bog. I had one in Michigan that grew on the edge of my goldfish pond that did beautifully. Always wanted another one, but they just die, die, die in my sandy soil.
Have you grown Nepeta?
This hardy member of the catnip family is a wonderful perennial. Can tolerate shade, but does well in full-sun, too. I found in part-shade it was less likely to spread. Hummingbirds and bees (esp bumblebees and mason bees) LOVE nepeta. And some cats like it when it is crushed (my Spooker does) but some cats aren't atrracted to it at all (like Daphne). I've found as a landscape plant, unless trampled on, cats leave it alone.
