Horse Slaughter Petition

I received an action alert from the Texas Humane Legislation Network. The whole country needs to get behind these national bills (H.R. 503/S. 311). The Humane Society of the United States has more information about it here. The cruelty that horses endure during their shipment to plants for slaughter will make you sick. Once they arrive at the plant, their death is anything but humane.

After years and years of fighting the lobbyists for these foreign owned horse slaughter plants, the 3 plants in the US, (2 in Texas and 1 in Illinois) have finally been closed for good. But it is still legal for horses to be shipped to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, and then their flesh is shipped to Asia and Europe for human consumption. With the horses being shipped live even further than before, their abuse continues for days.

In 2004, a 30-year-old bill that prevented the slaughter of our western wild horses was overturned and our wild horses are once again being caught and killed for overseas human consumption. Please sign the petition linked below, or contact your own Senator or Representative. You can find them via the HSUS web site here. You can then call the capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your Senators' and Legislators' offices and tell them that you support House Bill 503 and Senate Bill 311.

In my humble opinion, if Europeans and Asians want to eat horse meat, then they can kill their own horses. Our horses should not be considered an exportable commodity. And if Mexico and Canada want to keep their horse slaughtering plants open, then they can kill their own horses. Not ours.

Yeah, we saved our ex-racehorse Snap from this fate. We just worry what's going to happen to the broken down racehorses. There needs to be a way to take care of them after they've done their jobs that doesn't involve slaughter. There is no system set up for them except a few horse rescues and most of them are left with no help at all. Its really frustrating and makes Meowmy MAD. She wishes she could save them all but horses are big and misunderstood by lots of beans.

Sorry, its just a subject that we think a lot about.

(At least those Europeans are consuming all of the drugs the racehorses consumed)

Oh my. This is sad and disturbing.
I know we have some troubles here in Virginia... lots of homeless horsies and they have a horsie shelter in our county!

I hate animal mistreatment.
I hope all of those beans are ashamed and stop this

It makes me very upset and sad that our beautiful western wild horses are being slaughtered for overseas consumption.

I agree. Our horses are our horses and should be not be shipped out of the country for meat. Also, I can't believe they are still rounding up out wild horses. The cattlemen really need to get a grip. Those horses aren't eating them out of house and home.

I agree. It's the same here. The unscrupulous dealers buy up the wild moorland ponies and no longer wanted riding horses as well as ex race horses, and ship them to France. When we were in France two years ago we went into a market and there was a complete horse head on display on a butcher's stall. It made me feel sick!! It probably came originally from anywhere but France.

Thank you for letting us know about the horse slaughter bill.

That is an important bill. Horses do a lot of work for Beans, and don't deserve to get treated like that.

I had no idea that the law preventing the rounding up and slaughter of wild horses had been overturned. The greed of some people makes me ill. I signed the petition.

I thought the politicians had gotten the idea that Americans love its animals. I am shocked and angered that they are still allowing our beloved horses to be treated so cruely.

Thanks for helping to get the word out about America's horses. With so much attention on the horse slaughter issue, it's really hard to get any attention for the fact that through a sneaky, low down manuever by Senator Conrad Burns, after over 30 years of being protected from slaughter, our wild horses and burros can now be sold "without limitation".

What is really sad is that Congress has yet to repeal it and while they just sit and do nothing, the BLM began scooping up the wild horses and burros by the tens of thousands - 70,000 to be exact and now they are screaming how much it costs to care for them! They planned it this way so our mustangs and burros could be taken and sold easily and just disappear.

Thanks for not letting them be forgotten! There's a bill that has been kicking around that is suppose to restore their protection but the Senate won't bring it to the floor and its sat there for over 3 years now.

Will more people write their Senators and ask them to protect our wild horses and burros again before they are all gone?
