Bunco Aftermath

Ok, so we were fairly well behaved during Maw's Bunco game. Dorf lay in the middle of the floor so that he got stepped on a couple of times. Smokey yakked in the living room about half way through the game. Smokey lay on the card table before the game started, then he tried to eat somebody's food when they left their plate unattended.

All the women put their purses on the dividing wall between the entry and the dining room so that Dorf couldn't pee on them.

Some of you asked what is Bunco. It is a game of dice, it is played differently in virtually every Bunco group. Maw's group plays with 12 people. 4 people at each table. After each round, 2 people from each table move depending on whether they won or lost that round.

This group was formed 20 years ago when the neighborhood was brand new. The members used to be able to walk to the games. Over the years, many of the people have moved, either within this same city, or to another city. Some of the women who don't live too far are still in the group. None of the original members are still here, but there are a few who have been with the group for 17 or 18 years. Maw is one of them.

This group's hostess has always served a full dinner. Maw thinks it is funny how 12 women descend on a house, eat everything in sight, play the Bunco game and are gone in 2.5 hours. Some groups just put out snacks. Some groups drink lots of alcohol, some groups don't drink any alcohol. Maw's group has a little wine or Sangria, but most of the women drink sodas/pop.

You can Google Bunco and it will tell you some of the ways it is played. Some people spell it Bunko. Maw's group used to play for gifts. Originally $5 gifts, then they upped it to $10 gifts. Last year they started playing for money. Everyone puts in $10, then it is divided between most games won, most games lost, most buncos, who is holding the baby at the end, and a draw of names.

Maw has sold SO many Bunco gifts in her garage sales over the years. She likes playing for money now. No gifts to get rid of. One can only stand so many $5 or $10 items collected monthly for a couple of decades...

When Maw was cleaning up after everyone left, Smokey licked the salt off the Chex Mix.

We all played thundering herd of elephants when we came out of hiding.

My Grandma plays Bunco, and when it is going to be her turn to host, she always worries for weeks about what food to serve!

It sounds like fun and the money does sound better than gifts.

You all sound as if you were pretty well-behaved! Just one yak and a little nibble. Very good guys! There are a lot of Bunco players in Southwest Kansas - Mommy knows a lot of nurses who live for those nights there!

our Lady thinks anything that has dice or cards and a chance to win money has got to be fun. we think that if she ever let a non-resident into this house, we'd make very very sure that she regretted it. putting the purses up was a very good idea.

Oh Momma's impressed that you all ate a full dinner. Her Mom's group that she used to get to sub in sometimes only had snacks.

I think they should play for stinky goodness, instead of money.
