More News

Thank you for your whole-hearted support in our belief of keeping cats indoors where they are safe from natural, and even worse, human predators. For more proof that Texas has serious issues with animal cruelty in spite of its felony laws, check out this article, which we found via The Orange Tabbies. In addition, there is a trial underway now in Dallas to determine whether Mercy's owner is guilty of stabbing her and dousing her with gasoline and setting her on fire because she wouldn't breed. (And she was still a puppy!)

Unfortunately, you can peruse any newspaper in the U.S. and find instances of animal cruelty such as these. There is something seriously wrong here. Look at the defenders of Michael Vick and his dog fighting trials.

We all need to stand up and say that cruelty to animals is sick, and wrong. Support your local organizations that are involved in the capture and prosecution of people who mistreat and torture animals. Make sure that the group you give your time and/or money to is actively involved in helping change the way we see these crimes in the U.S. Many rescue groups just do rescue work. Which is a wonderful endeavor in, and of, itself. But please get involved in toughening existing laws. Here in Texas, you can support the Texas Humane Legislation Network. It works with state legislators and cruelty investigators to change Texas state laws. It works to ensure lobbyists don't insert huge loopholes into legislation allowing cock fighting, or horse slaughter plants for human consumption, or puppy mills for dog fighting.

On a national level, support the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, The Humane Society of the United States, or the Society for Animal Protective Legislation. Please, get involved!!! Write letters to the editors of your newspapers when there is a cruelty case in your state and speak for those who can not speak for themselves. Remember, a lot of the human abusers or killers began by abusing animals.

The story about Mercy made my eyes leak. But the worst part is that, as you say, this is just one example in many, many similar cases. Anyone who could do harm to an innocent animal does not deserve the title "human".

We support the ASPCA.

this is a great initiative, all Beans who loves animals should support such things.

same here in the UK - my mum often reads horrific tales of animal curelty, however, people do seem to get charged here and go to jail...

What you say is so true. It's important that people realize animal cruelty is not okay and that it will not be tolerated.

Animal cruelty can never be right in any shape or form and until effective legislation comes in, it will continue. Here in the UK organised cruelty eg dog fighting etc is prosecuted, but there are always individual cases that never seem to get the punishment to fit the crime.

I am involved and I have been for a long time. It's just so damned sad that we need to be. We are humans and we should be beyond doing these vile things to animals.
