Photo Hunt #34

This week's Photo Hunter's theme is "messy". How many cat blogs are going to be displaying their cats lying in a heap of wrapping paper for this theme?

Fountain Friday

Sandy Paws brought us a Drinkwell Platinum Fountain. We luf it! So does Maw. It holds a gallon and 1/4 of water, and has an adjustable flow. Some of us drink from the waterfall, and some of us drink from the pool. Maw lufs it because she doesn't have to fill it 4 times a day like she did with the tiny table fountain that she was using. Also, it has a pre-filter to catch our furs, and then the charcoal filter to catch other stuff. The whole thing is dishwasher safe too. Maw is probably gonna get another one to replace our 10 year old meditation fountain which Paw bought for Maw, but then we started using it as our drinking fountain. It is very hard to clean and Paw is tired of the noise. So there you go.

Dorf's Gold Star Award

Eric and Flynn, our bestest furriends from the Yookay, awarded owr furry own Dorfington Fish Stanley this wondermous Extraordinary Gold Star Award.

Eric and Flynn said they nominated Dorf because "he has had so many health problems in his life, but he has the sweetest look on his face, and is a brave poodin."

The Extraordinary Gold Star Award was created by - Storm, The Furry Fighter - and is for Bloggers who have achieved or done something special. The award celebrates beyond what is ordinary or usual.
1) Post the explanation and rules of the award and link back to the blogger who presented you with the award and repeat the reason why you received it.
2) Pass the Award on to two other Bloggers who you think deserve it and explain why.

Dorf would like to pass this award on to:

1) Diva Kitty Mom for organizing the entire Secret Paws project this year. It was huge, with over 100 kitties participating, some woofies, buns, birds, a tarantula, and a horse! From looking at the Secret Paws blog, it appears that DKM sent out around 225 emails to organize this huge effort!!! And, from reading all the blogs of very excited poodins receiving their Secret Paws prezzies, we have to say that is was a rousing success! Thanks DKM!!!!

2) Miles of The Meezer Tails because he is my almost toofless brudder frum anudder mudder. He has the same disease that I had: Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions and he keeps having to get more teeth extracted. One day he'll be just like me, toofless. But he remains SO FREAKING FUNNY in spite of the enormous pain that FORLs cause. He cracks us up with every post and that is impawtant.

Thanks Eric and Flynn for thinking of me. Youse guys is the bestest long distance Yookay brudders a guy could ask for.

Mancat Monday Quality Testing

Smokey performed the QA testing of China Cat's Secret Paw present. China Cat told us her favorite color is bloo, so that is why the bed is bloo. Smokey said the bed passed all tests, so Maw gave it to the guy in the bloo shorts. Well, he might be wearing bloo long-johns now, and he took the bloo bed to China Cat's house. You can see China Cat testing out the bed over at her own bloggie.

Formerly Feral Friday

Jenny is still mostly feral although she has lived with us for 13 years now. She wasn't trapped until she was between 3-4 months of age. She is extremely skittish still and can't be picked up. We have never pilled her. She has only been to the vet a handful of times. (Thank goodness she is a very healthy cat.)

One time years ago before Davy was killed, Maw and Paw went to England to see Paw's family. Jenny had gone out the night before and didn't want to come in the next morning. Maw and Paw had to leave for the airport, so Maw told the petsitter that Jenny was out and that she would probably come in if the petsitter opened the patio door and then hid in the hallway until Jenny was well inside. Well, Jenny didn't come in for that whole week. The petsitter tried everything to get Jenny to come in, but she refused. So Jenny stayed outside and ate her meals outside and waited until Maw & Paw came home before she came inside.

Thirteen Things That Maw Needs to Do Today

1. Give Bow his daily steroid pill.

2. Give G.T. his monthly allergy shot.

3. Vacuum up our furs.

4. Scrub some litter boxes.

5. Launder the tablecloth that somebody yakked on overnight.

6. Rake leaves for like the 100th time.

7. Take more fudge to the V-E-T because they ate the first 3 lbs. already.

8. Finish sending out Christmas cards (yeah, she's a little late).

9. Clean up any additional yak that we are inclined to provide today.

10. Scoop litter boxes a squillion times.

11. Help us visit blogs.

12. Stop any fights that we get into.

13. Clean eye goobers out of Obi's eyes and brush him.

We Met Our Project H.A.M. Challenge

Junior Babee challenged us to photograph as many poodins in one bed as we could accommodate, with the proceeds going to benefit Project H.A.M. Well, that's basically 6 poodins because all 10 of us won't share that small a space without serious cat fights breaking out. So here is a very lousy picture (taken at 2:30 am) of 6 of us in bed at once. Notice that G.T. and Reno had to get up to see why I was out of bed and taking a picture of them in the middle of the night.

Clockwise from bottom right: G.T., Reno, Sally, Obi, Dorf, Smokey.

Factual and Funny Friday

Lots of questions were brought up yesterday about our rise in the number of paws here at the Forty Paws. Nope. We are not changing our name. Yes, there are 2 Orinches living around here. Maw went out to break up a cat fight and came face to face with 2 Orinches. In the dusk, they looked to be almost identical, except that one was a bit larger. The Orinch that we trapped and took to the vet appears to be a wee bit smaller than the other one. Maybe the other one is Orinch's father, maybe there have been 2 Orinches all along. Yes, they are totally marmalade tabbies. No, they will NOT be coming inside. At this point, we aren't even sure how often they both come here to feed. Maw regrets she didn't have the V-E-T tip Orinch's ear when he was being neutered. That would make identification and future trapping easier. Yes, Maw still intends to trap Bob(bie) and now the other Orinch and have them both fully vetted. No, Opie will not be an inside Opossum like TCO over at Morning-Martini's who actually had her photo taken with Santa. Opie is a wild opossum and will stay that way. Maw is now buying cat food in the VERY LARGE bags for the outside feeders.

Now, for those poodins who are way too young to view the following material, it would be a good thing for you to stop reading right now. Here is yet another funny email picture that Maw received:

The First Time

Dorf was getting on Maw's last nerve the other day by picking on Obi & Reno, so she just opened up the window to our new cat enclosure and let us go exploring. It still needs some finishing work, like a padlock on the gate, some more wood under one part where we might be able to squeeze out if we really tried, the shelves need to be attached, and Maw needs to put us a drinking device out there, so that we can drink day old outside-influenced water. Oh, and of course, the cat flap needs to be installed in the new window.

Maw has found numerous window-fitting cat flaps and even one site that custom makes them to your exact window dimensions (which is kinda pricey). So, Maw figures she would check with the people who installed her new windows to see if they could custom make a window that she could just replace the current bottom sash with a cat flap custom made window. The salesperson didn't comprehend so Maw got frustrated. So we'll probably just let Paw custom make a wooden insert with the cat flap installed in it. It ain't pretty, but we don't care. We just wanna go OUTSIDE!!!!!

And guess what? On the outskirts of our town, there have been honest to goodness not lying if I'm dying COUGAR sitings. So people who moved out to the country to get away from the city life are all freaked out because well duh, nature is in their backyards. Hello????? Just another reason to not let your cats roam free. The cougar is only about 80-90 lbs. they are guesstimating at this time, but a poodin would make a very nice lunch.

Enclosure Info

So here is our old enclosure that was built after Davy was killed in August 2000. Paw built this one all by himself and designed it all by himself. It was very functional and worked great for 7 years. Maw & Paw took it away when they had the new windows installed this summer. The cage wood was rotting in places and some of the wiring was rusting and such.

Paw was going to build us a new one, but since he works 6 days a week and never has anytime for anything else, Bow took matters into his own paws and ordered a huge cat enclosure from C & D Pet Products. It is preassembled before it is shipped, with all screw holes pre-drilled and the screws in place ready to be screwed tight. It went together beautifully. All the pieces are labeled so that you can tell what attaches to what.

With this enclosure, we set it up off the ground by placing 2x4s under the bottom of the cage. So any rotting that occurs will mostly affect the 2x4s. Plus, I can trim easily along the 2x4s with the weed eater and not worry about my string getting caught up in the wire.

We also ordered this one in a 7 foot tall version instead of 6 foot so that the top is now above the top of the windows.

You can also see the magical instant grass that I put down in October to replace the dying Asian Jasmine and to get rid of all the weeds. I don't know how well St. Augustine will hold up to the thundering herd of elephants of 40 paws, but here's hoping.

Sunday Noos

Yesterday morning, Maw spied Opie the Opossum walk right across our backyard and start chomping on Orinch & Bob(bie)'s food. So Paw got some really great pictures of him nom-nomming on the food. (The food dish sits in a bowl of water so the ants can't get to the food.)

Several poodins expressed concern about Smokey's Krissmouse stocking hanging directly on the fireplace doors. Such as Miss Peach's concern that it would catch on fire. Well, we haven't had a fire in our fireplace in several years. Actually, Maw has been looking for a good chimney sweep to come and clean and inspect the chimney for a couple of months. They are very busy at this time of year and she only wants to use one that is on Angie's List.

Funny thing about fireplaces here in the DFW metroplex. Most every home built since the 70s has at least one. The average temperatures for this area in December and January are lower 50s for the highs and lower 30s for the lows. High-end homes, luxury homes, estates, whatever you wanna call them, now seem to have multiple fireplaces, adding them to the master bedroom suites and to the breakfast rooms, and even on the patios where the patios are being built as an entertaining destination with fireplaces, built in grills, sinks and refrigeration. On Christmas Eve, when driving anyplace in the metroplex, there is the smell of wood burning and a smokey haze hangs in the air because everyone is using their fireplaces regardless of the outside temperature. It's kinda funny.

Eric & Flynn were concerned that we would need to open the doors so that Sandy Paws could come out to deliver his presents. So, we will move Smokey's stocking on Christmas Eve so that the doors can be opened.

We thank everyone for their concern and helpful hints. We don't know what we would do without all of our furriends from the cat blogosphere!
