Thursday Thirteen # 9

Thirteen Things about Life in Dallas

1. There are 2 seasons. Summer and The Rest of the Year

2. There are tons of people.

3. There are lots of things to do, from symphonies, to Broadway Musicals, to Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic, to Six Flags, to Horse Racing, to Nascar Racing, zoos, museums, lakes. You name it, you can probably find it here.

4. There are no mountains. Period.

5. There are tons of places to shop. North Park Mall is famous for drawing in celebrities and "rich people".

6. There are LOTS of rich people here. Old rich and nouveau rich. California people love to transfer here because they can buy mansions with what they were paying for their previous houses.

7. Housing is very affordable, but property taxes are VERY EXPENSIVE because there is no state income tax. Sales tax is kinda high also. 8.25% where we live.

8. A lot of people have pools. (Because it's so hot)

9. A lot of people hire out their yardwork. (Because it's so hot)

10. The whole Dallas/Ft. Worth area and its surrounding cities is called the "Metroplex", and it is HUGE.

11. As we've said before, you have to water your foundations to prevent them from cracking and your walls splitting open when the clay soils dry out and shrink.

12. There are still coyotes and bobcats in the outlying suburbs.

13. There are tons of restaurants here.

That sounds a lot like where I live in south Florida! Except housing is expensive here AND property taxes are very high (no state tax here either). We don't have coyotes though. I wish we did.

A coyote has been seen prowling the neighborhood and surrounding area after dark this spring. We heard it yowling in the woods one night! Scary.

that still just boggles my mind about watering your foundation...

we have coyotes here, too.

That sales tax is really high - but we have to pay state income tax, so I guess it balances out. However - some people around here complain because we have 6% sales tax. Can you imagine all the bluehairs complaining about 8.25% ???

We have a state income tax, a state, county and city sales tax and high property taxes. And every April they raise the value of your property and then brag that they only raised the property tax .5%, then they add fees on to the water bill fur "snow removal" and "garbage fees". They think we're idiots, that's why dad is looking to move to Ten-a-see.

I love to visit Dallas. I've been there many times over the years. A company I worked for a few years back was in Mesquite. So I'm familiar with the East side of the loop. There are so many great places. I took Sean when he was a baby to that private zoo that is downtown, I can't remember the name but it was really nice. And then there is a place to shop and tour, I think it was the Cadillac Station or Street or something like that. Does that sound familiar? Anyway, Dallas is a great city!!! Sean's even seen a Neurosurgeon at the Children's Hospital there. If you've ever been, the TRAIN room is his ultimate place to visit!!! I highly recommend a stop the the Hopsital just to veiw this amazing atrium full of mountains and trains and villiages!

I haven't been to Dallas and neither had Mommy, but she's been to San Antonio and Austin. She said it was very hot there. My auntie lives in Keller and she says it's very hot there too! How do you handle the heat with your fur?

Mom's flown through the Dallas airport many times, but never spent any time in Dallas, although she has Houston and Galviston. It can get very hot and muggy there!

Thanks for teaching us about Dallas! 8.25% sales tax doesn't sound that high. It's 8% in the province of Ontario (where my humans lived before they were posted to Germany) and it's 18% here in Germany! Plus, in both places, there is a lot of income tax too. So 8.25% sounds really low in comparison!
